In Eastern Medicine, each season impacts the body in unique ways. I look forward to sharing with you the best ways to use Eastern medical knowledge to naturally improve your fertility and boost your chances of a successful IVF cycle throughout the year.
The emerging fall season calls us to spend more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful foliage in the cooler temperatures. However, it is precisely the crisp, dry air that Eastern medicine recognizes can negatively impact fertility. Dryness can weaken the body by depleting the fluids that line the lungs, nose and throat making you more susceptible to illness. It also stagnates the blood and energy flow of the body. Therefore, it is crucial to counter autumn’s dryness to support your fertility treatments.
Eating in harmony with the seasons is one of the best ways to adjust to the changing climate and maintain balance. So, as autumn welcomes in dryer climates, it is important to eat foods that nourish (yin) fluids such as blood. To accomplish this, add more white root vegetables and squashes to your diet, and minimize your intake of cold, raw foods. Think large dishes of beautiful roasted fall vegetables! Enjoy soups, wild and brown rice, beans, cooked squash, yams, pumpkin, parsnip, leeks, kale, sweet potatoes, red onions, cauliflower, collard greens, brussels sprouts and mushrooms along with warm spices such as garlic, cinnamon and ginger.
In addition to these fall food modifications, consistent acupuncture treatments (1-2x/week) before and/or during your cycle you can maximize your fertility cycle by improving blood flow to the ovaries, follicles and uterus. Acupuncture, the placement of sterile steel hair-thin needles into specific points on the body, has the unique ability to naturally increase circulation and reduce chi (energy) stagnation by stimulating the lung chi and respiratory fluids as well as invigorating the blood. This will not only help protect you from catching a seasonal cold or sore throat, keeping you stronger during your cycle; it also can directly influence blood flow to the essential reproductive organs to naturally enhance fertility and augment your IVF cycle.
