The holiday season brings parties with friends and family, gifts, and lots of food. It can become overwhelming for some. It’s important to not let your health fall to the wayside when you are busy during this time of year, especially if you are trying to conceive. The reproductive specialists at Sher Fertility Institute New York in Manhattan discuss ways to stay healthy during the sometimes-stressful holiday season.
- Practice self-care. Remember to take time out of your busy day to focus on yourself. Read a book, meditate, or enjoy your favorite hobby to decompress after a stressful day. If you are feeling overwhelmed and over-extended, don’t feel bad declining an invitation. Make sure to take care of yourself first.
- Keep nutrition in check. It’s easy to overindulge in the abundant sweet and decadent treats that crop up during the holidays, but practice self-control whenever possible. You don’t want to start the new year with an extra ten pounds! Keep hydrated with water to avoid chugging empty calories from soda and cocktails. And load up your plate with veggies and lean protein to stay full so you won’t be tempted by too many desserts later.
- Find time to exercise. We know the last think on your list of things to do is exercise. But you can incorporate movement in your already packed day. Park a little further in the parking lot, opt for the stairs, or take a brisk walk in the mall or after each holiday meal.
- Follow healthy hygiene habits. ‘Tis the season for colds and flus. Keep the germs at bay by washing your hands before every meal, and keep hand sanitizer readily available just in case. If you get sick, avoid the get togethers so you’re not responsible for spreading the sickness.
All of us here at Sher Fertility Institute New York wish you and your family a healthy, happy holiday season.
